"How long until my child can read the Quran?" Parents ask me this more than any other question. Before a child can read the Quran itself, they first learn Noorani Qaida. So the real question is: how long does Noorani Qaida take?
The honest answer
Most children finish Noorani Qaida in about 2 to 3 months when they take 3 classes a week.
Some finish a little sooner. Some need a few more weeks. In my experience, the biggest difference is not the child's age. It is their attitude to learning and how regularly they practise.
What a child learns in Noorani Qaida
Noorani Qaida is the first step in reading the Quran. Your child learns:
- every Arabic letter and how to say it from its correct place in the mouth and throat (this is called makharij)
- the small vowel marks that change how a letter sounds
- how letters join together to make words
- how to read short words smoothly, without stopping on every letter
By the end, the Arabic script no longer looks like a puzzle. Your child is ready to start reading the Quran itself.
Why we don't rush it
Some letters in Arabic sound almost the same to English ears, but they are different. If a child learns a letter the wrong way, the mistake stays with them for years. Fixing an old habit is much harder than learning it correctly the first time.
So we take each letter slowly and listen carefully. In a one-to-one class, the teacher hears every sound your child makes and corrects it straight away. That is one reason one-to-one classes work so well for Qaida.
What helps a child finish faster
- Regular classes. Three classes a week keeps the letters fresh. Long gaps mean going back over old lessons.
- Ten minutes of practice at home. Ask your child to read yesterday's lesson to you. It makes a real difference.
- The same class times each week. Children do better when classes are part of their normal routine.
- Praise for effort. A child who feels proud of trying keeps going on difficult days.
You are also welcome to sit in on your child's class. Many parents like to see what was taught so they can help during the week.
What comes after Noorani Qaida?
When Qaida is complete, your child moves on to reading the Quran itself in our Nazra Quran course. The Tajweed rules are added step by step as they read. If you are not sure about the difference, read Nazra or Tajweed: which course does my child need?
